Upgrade for a specific daily problem
Put the WF-1000XM6 on the shortlist if isolation or calls are the reasons your current earbuds fall short. RTINGS and SoundGuys provide useful independent support for those priorities. The larger shell still needs to fit your ears, and the longest ANC battery rating does not apply to every codec. For a satisfied Liberty 5 owner, the current price gap and a specific unmet need should decide the upgrade.
Reasons to consider it. Things to check.
What stands out
- Isolation and microphone performance receive positive independent findings
- Two-device Multipoint for compatible phone-and-laptop routines
- SBC, AAC and LDAC support, plus LC3 with compatible LE Audio
- Sound Connect provides listening and noise-control adjustments
Limitations
- Larger shells can be difficult for smaller ears
- ANC runtime is rated lower with LDAC than AAC/SBC
- IPX4 does not state a dust-protection classification
- A higher price does not guarantee better personal comfort

What the extra budget should solve
The WF-1000XM6 makes the clearest case for someone whose earbuds spend a lot of time between a commute and a working day. Noise reduction, a usable microphone and a dependable fit matter more in that routine than a long list of listening modes. Start with the problem in your current pair: outside noise, calls, discomfort or missing controls. A premium replacement should address something specific.
There is useful independent support for Sony's approach. RTINGS highlights isolation and microphone noise handling, while warning that the larger shells can be difficult for small ears. SoundGuys also praises the sound, noise cancellation and microphone, but notes the high price and a change in sound when ANC is switched off. Those findings support a focused shortlist, rather than a promise that every part of the experience will suit everyone.
Fit is the first decision, not the last adjustment
The sealed fit contributes to the Sony's isolation. Choose the correct tip size and confirm that both earbuds stay seated when talking and moving your jaw. An earbud that loosens during ordinary movement can undermine an otherwise impressive feature set.
Small-ear listeners should take the shell shape seriously. A larger housing may press against the outer ear even when the tip itself seals properly. Trying another tip does not necessarily fix that contact. Use the return period to check a realistic listening session, not simply whether the earbuds pair successfully.
This is also why a premium upgrade is not automatically a comfort upgrade. If your current earbuds already fit particularly well, keep that advantage in the comparison. Replacing an occasional annoyance with a pair that needs constant adjustment is poor value, however strong its other capabilities.
Match the battery claim to the codec
Sony's operating-time table makes an important distinction: with noise cancellation active, AAC or SBC is rated up to eight hours, LDAC up to five, and LC3 up to seven. Enabling additional features can reduce those figures further. The case's total is not uninterrupted earbud playback.
For a normal commute, the difference may be easy to accommodate. For a long flight or a day with few breaks, it changes the charging plan. Choose the listening mode you expect to use before deciding whether the rated runtime is sufficient. There is little benefit in enabling every feature and then budgeting around the longest number available.
Check the phone and laptop combination
Multipoint supports two connected devices, useful when a phone and laptop share the day. Verify how calls and playback switch on your actual devices and conferencing apps. Two connections do not mean two audio streams will be mixed together.
Sony documents SBC, AAC and LDAC for Classic Audio, with LC3 available through compatible LE Audio connections. The source device and Sound Connect settings determine what is used. LDAC is not a benefit an iPhone provides through its normal Bluetooth connection, and an Android label alone does not guarantee every mode.
Make one settings change at a time. A stable connection that behaves predictably during a work call is often more useful than selecting an unfamiliar mode solely because its name sounds more advanced.
Calls and outdoor use need realistic expectations
The independent microphone findings make the WF-1000XM6 worth examining for mixed work and commuting. They do not turn it into a dedicated boom-microphone headset. Very loud surroundings can still interfere with speech, and the computer's selected microphone and call app matter alongside the earbuds.
Test the specific routine that matters: an incoming phone call while the laptop is connected, or a meeting from the room where you normally work. A short voice recording can help reveal the wrong input device before an important call.
The earbuds carry an IPX4 rating for light splashes. Keep the charging case and contacts dry; the rating is not a reason to plan swimming or immersion. It also does not establish a dust-protection rating.
Upgrading from Liberty 5
The soundcore Liberty 5 already provides app controls, ANC and two-device connections. Sony therefore needs to earn the extra spend through a better match to your priorities, not through the mere presence of those features.
If your Liberty 5 fits well and covers the commute, compare the actual offers before replacing it. If intrusive noise or call handling remains the reason for shopping, Sony's independent reviews provide a stronger reason to investigate. Our Sony versus Liberty 5 guide breaks that decision into fit, battery modes and device compatibility.

Who this is for
A commuter or mixed phone-and-laptop user whose priorities are isolation and calls, and who can confirm a stable sealed fit.
Consider something else if…
Your current earbuds already cover those needs, you dislike sealed tips, or a large housing presses against your ears.
